18 CREATING HANDMADE TEXTURE - LINO STAMPS

Simple Logo Designs of Space Elevator

Potential Postage Stamp Design (Left)

In order to create the more retro texture, we also decided to play with manual, handmade methods. We used lino samples and made prints with both an ink pad and block printing ink. In these experiments we found strength in the circular simple logo designs I made. We saw them being implemented on our postcards as a fictional counterpart to the 'processing' and imprinting procedure that occurs in the postal service.

Logo Postage Stamping Inspiration

The specialist 'space elevator' logo stamp would be printed onto the reverse of the postcard, along with the postage stamp, message and address.

Stamping on different colour paper surfaces had varying levels of success. The clarity was expectedly stronger on the cream, flecked paper compared to the grey sheen paper. The metallic look to the silver fit the topic better. In terms of our intention to work further with scans of the prints however, those with the clarity on the paler paper were best to work with. The metallic nature of the silver paper doesn't come through in scans.

We made a repeated print of our circular logo designs with the intention of making batches of stickers or badges. We liked the fact that the page of printed designs enabled a mix of slightly different logos to be made and each resulting badge/sticker would therefore be more unique.

Modified lino cutting kit - velcro attachment to stamp
Through attaching circular velcro pads to our circular lino stamps and a handle (purchased as a lino stamping kit, above), we created an effective and more ergonomic action of stamping.
